Hello OMA3,
There are many new members since our last newsletter so we thought we would recap the last update for the benefit of those who just joined (or who never got around to reading our newsletter, *gasp*). August was anything but quiet at OMA3, debunking the myth that everyone was on vacation. We rolled out our foundational position paper on the InterWorld Portaling System (IWPS), drawing attention and interest from various companies. New working groups were up and running, including a successful coding jam demonstrating a cross world portal with cross world messaging. On the partnership front, we secured a liaison agreement with MSF, the Metaverse Standards Forum, creating a channel for wider industry input into our standards. And last but not least, we introduced a new section to the newsletter dedicated to member news.
Since then, wow, lots of momentum has been building for this alliance. OMA3 is clearly shaping up to be the authority on Web3 standards! So grab a cup of coffee and let’s catch up.

Paying creators is magical

You've likely heard about the recent controversies involving OpenSea and Blur, who have fallen short of upholding the promise of Web3 as a fair and nurturing space for creators. As Animoca Brands CEO and OMA3 Vice Chair Robby Yung aptly put it to Decrypt, "Why would I want to share my content with other people, unless I have the ability to benefit from royalty payments in the future? Otherwise, we should just go back to Web2, where nobody shares anything."
In light of this, Magic Eden and Yuga Labs have decided to take action. They've joined forces with Animoca and OMA3 to establish industry standards that focus on compensating creators appropriately. The goal is to move away from a wild west scenario and lay down some tracks for how creators should be treated and paid. Chris Akhavan, Chief Gaming Officer for Magic Eden noted, “Our commitment to creators is unwavering. Partnering with OMA3 amplifies our efforts to create sustainable creator economies where every creator is recognized and rewarded fairly.” Mike Seavers, CTO of Yuga Labs, added, ”We share a deep belief that the Metaverse should be open, decentralized, interoperable, and a place where users and creators control their content, identity, and data. Yuga is proud to help move that vision forward by contributing to the efforts and standards being led by OMA3 and its members."

Portaling and Mapping update
Back in August, the Portaling and Mapping Working Group, PMWG, shot its first salvo into the metaverse community with a position paper on the InterWorld Portaling System, or IWPS in short, as a first stake in the ground for building a true cross-world, cross-platform metaverse. Since then the group has been busy putting together a technical set of requirements for how this system might look, and will soon be ready to solicit feedback and proposals. So keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming announcement of a Request for Proposal. That team is also busy pulling together a follow-up coding jam from the one we had in August. And if you’re feeling FOMO for not having participated in this initiative, you can contact Batis Samadian, Chair of PMWG, for more detail.

What are our members up to?
In the spirit of community-building (after all, the more the merrier), we are including news from our member community. This gives members an opportunity to make announcements to a new audience and to hear about what other members are doing. So here is our inaugural “members news” section. If you are a member of OMA3 and have news you’d like to share for the next newsletter, contact us at info@oma3.org.
- Upland, one of the founding members of OMA3 and the leading web3 Metaverse Super App, announces its plans to make its in-game utility token Spark tradable on Ethereum following an overwhelming majority (87.25%) approval in a recent community governance vote. This initiative allows Upland to accelerate its mission to build the world’s largest digital open economy in the metaverse through its dynamic ecosystem of players, entrepreneurs, creators, and developers by allowing its utility token, Spark, to be traded outside of Upland’s boundaries.
- STYLE Protocol is exploring usability of NFT-Avatars within the famous MOBA-Games League of Legends and Dota2. Starting later in October NFTs can be turned into in-game avatars for players in local environments whilst gaming online.
- Hotpot Protocol is pioneering tokenless rewards — they’ve created plug-and-play infra for dapps to gamify rewards and simplify user acquisition. They’ve recently integrated with Chainlink VRF to reinforce the transparency and integrity of their chance-based models.
