NFT.NYC Happy Hour: The Lowdown
Just wanted to share a quick recap from our night at Alumni Ventures on April 3. Despite the weather trying to rain on our parade, a bunch of us from the Web3 world showed up, ready to learn more about NFTs and OMA3’s role in shaping the open internet. And yes the open bar didn’t hurt.
Unlike ETHDenver, where the vast majority of attendees were crypto die-hards, our NFT.NYC event had a mix of people - seasoned TradFi professionals and established fintech veterans to NFT artists and degens. Reps from our partner Blockchain Game Alliance came to support, and we even got a surprise visit from the ArtIDStandard.org!
So, guess what? We’ve hit the big leagues! Someone loved our Luma event so much that they copied it, word for word, on Evite. Talk about being flattered, right? But hey, it didn’t rain on our parade (despite the weather) or dim the spotlight on our OMA3 spiel. We dived deep into the exciting direction we’re headed and who’s joining the journey.
We dropped the latest scoop on IWPS and rolled out a demo video that’s nothing short of magic—showing off real-time portaling between web-based worlds and native apps. Yep, it’s the sweat and brilliance of our team coming to life, laying down the groundwork for IWPS. We also gave an update on our token launch and our event sponsor, Propeller Industries, broke down how OMA3 members can navigate the tax maze when the time comes. From the nods and the chatter post-talk, it’s clear we struck a chord.
Big shoutout to everyone who made it out despite the weather—you guys are the real MVPs. For those who couldn't make it, we missed you! But don't worry, this is just the start. We’ll be ramping up our in-person event schedule over the next year as we roll out IWPS, NFT royalty infrastructure, metaverse reputation, and of course our native token. And a huge thanks to Alumni Ventures and Propeller Industries for backing us up; we’re proud to be associated with you.
More photos and videos can be found here. Cheers to everyone for making the night memorable and proving that a little rain can't dampen our spirits. Here's to many more evenings of innovation, collaboration, and maybe better weather.
Panel Discussion: Token Drop, Portaling and the the OMA3 Vision
OMA3 board members speaking at NFT.NYC
The day after our happy hour, four of our board members representing Animoca Brands, Space, Upland, and My Neighbor Alice (from left to right above), took the main stage at NFT.NYC to emphasize in a more public forum the ongoing mission of OMA3 and the importance of interoperability in a truly open internet. We also gave the same update on IWPS and finally opened the panel up for questions.
There were a few members of the audience who found it hard to believe we could solve the interoperability complexities such as file formats, and given the fragmentation we’ve seen in Web3 and the metaverse this skepticism is understandable. Luckily for us we’re not doing this alone. Our partner the Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF), with their thousand-strong membership that includes Khronos Group (gLTF), Alliance for Open USD, Unity, Epic, Nvidia, and Microsoft, is handling all the standardization not specific to Web3. On the flip side there was also some “are we almost there yet” questioning of the panel which is also understandable. We love the anticipation. Between OMA3 and MSF we will get there, and the redesigned 3D user-owned internet will be amazing.
Working group updates
OMA3 has three active working groups and all of them are going to have an impact this year. Here’s the update.
- The NFT Working Group kicked off its meetings which will be focusing on building solutions to address NFT royalties and commissions in a secure and enforceable manner. We will be addressing all 9 use case documents created in collaboration with MSF, spanning everything from NFT loans to NFT fractionalization. It’s worthwhile joining OMA3 to view these documents as they are comprehensive of all the ways NFTs can be used and royalties can be paid. The fun is just beginning.
- The Portaling and Mapping Working Group took a breather for NFT.NYC, but will now make a big push to release a first draft specification of IWPS for review. As we mentioned above, we already released a demo so implementation is a bit ahead of spec writing at the moment. Hopefully we can close the gap in the next month.
- The Token and Infrastructure Working Group (yes you read it correctly- we changed the name to prepare for post token launch) sent out a Request for Information to the top infrastructure companies in Web3 and is now evaluating all the responses. We are favoring launching our own Layer 1 or Layer 2 at the moment (thanks to Memecoin Mania and all the congestion resulting from it) but nothing has been finalized. As we mentioned last month, if you have an opinion or an infrastructure product to pitch, contact us or join OMA3!
A growing family
First and foremost, congratulations to Africarare on being nominated and elected to the Board of OMA3! We are very excited to add Africa to the family of traiblazers! As Mic Mann, CEO and co-founder of Africarare puts it, “Africarare Ubuntuland proudly joins the OMA3 board, poised to infuse the alliance with our AI, Web3, and metaverse expertise, gearing up to include the African community towards a dynamic, youth-driven future.” If you are interested in knowing more about how board members receive nominations and are elected, please reach out to Alfred Tom, Executive Director.
